As professionals themselves, Shahr, a venture capitalist with Plug and Play, and Amanda, a lawyer, co-founder of OP Lawyers, and co-founder of a local café, were exhausted by events asking founders, “How are you so successful?” instead of the questions that uncover who entrepreneurs become when things fall apart.

Amanda Ovaici and Shahr Savizi co-founded FuckUp Nights YYC, a platform that demystifies failure for entrepreneurs.

Amanda, a first generation Canadian trailblazer, has built an impactful career as a lawyer specializing in family, employment, and civil law. Passionate about advocating for marginalized voices, she combines her legal expertise with commitment to building vibrant communities. Amanda co founded Café Alchemist, a community space inspired by global travels.

She also lends her talents to initiatives like the Calgary Health Foundation and Calgary Inner City Builders Association addressing critical issues, like mental health and housing behind her professional pursuits. Amanda is a devoted mom and adventure and adrenaline junkie who thrives on taking bold leaps, both in life and out of airplanes.

The event brings together entrepreneurial types to hear speakers share their worst start-up screw-ups, and the tales of how they survived — and often thrived — despite them.

Ovaici believes one of the reasons F.U.N. events are so well-received is that they foster connections between newer and more-established entrepreneur types. “Our goal is essentially to facilitate relationships between people who are thinking of taking that step into business, or are operating a start-up, with people who are currently going through struggles or who have overcome them,” she says. “Pairing them together nurtures our business community in Calgary that much more.”
